For women navigating menopause, working out harder isn’t necessarily the answer when weight loss becomes more difficult. In a recent TODAY.com article, “Struggling to Lose Weight in Menopause? Make This 1 Change to Your Workout,” fitness expert Megan Roup suggests that women who are doing frequent high-intensity workouts may benefit from scaling back the intensity and taking a more balanced approach to exercise.
The idea isn’t to stop exercising or avoid challenging workouts altogether. Instead, Roup recommends paying attention to how the body responds to exercise during this stage of life and incorporating lower-impact movement and strength-focused exercise rather than assuming that more intense cardio will automatically produce better results.
From Our Perspective
At Nore Women’s Health, we think the larger message here is an important one: menopause can be a time to reassess how you exercise, not simply exercise harder. Maintaining muscle through strength training, staying active, allowing adequate recovery, and finding an approach you can sustain can all be valuable parts of supporting health through midlife.
Weight changes during menopause are also rarely about exercise alone. Hormonal changes, age-related loss of muscle mass, sleep, stress, nutrition, and other individual factors can all play a role. If your usual approach no longer seems to be working, it may be worth looking at the bigger picture rather than assuming you simply need to push yourself harder.
