Melinda French Gates Commits $215 Million to Women’s Health, Puts Menopause in the Spotlight

What We’re Reading with Julie Morin, WHNP-BC

For decades, menopause has been an overlooked and underfunded area of women’s healthcare. Now, one of the world’s most influential philanthropists is helping bring it into the spotlight.

In a June 4, 2026, interview with USA TODAY’s The Excerpt, Melinda French Gates discussed her commitment of an additional $215 million to women’s health through Pivotal, the organization she founded. While the funding continues her longstanding work in contraception and maternal health, it also marks an important expansion into midlife women’s health, including perimenopause and menopause.

Menopause Is More Than a Personal Health Issue

For many women, menopause arrives during some of the busiest and most demanding years of their lives. They’re managing careers, raising children, caring for aging parents, and juggling responsibilities that leave little room for their own health concerns.

Then come the symptoms. Hot flashes that interrupt meetings. Night sweats that make a good night’s sleep nearly impossible. Brain fog that makes it harder to concentrate. Changes in mood, energy, and sexual health that can affect relationships and everyday life.

Not every woman experiences significant symptoms, but for those who do, the impact can be substantial.

French Gates points to the professional consequences of menopause, including women who leave the workforce or consider retiring earlier than planned because of their symptoms.

These aren’t simply inconveniences women should be expected to tolerate. When menopause symptoms interfere with a woman’s ability to work, sleep, or enjoy her life, they deserve medical attention.

A $10 Million Investment in Better Menopause Education

One particularly important component of the new funding is a $10 million commitment to The Menopause Society to help expand healthcare provider education and improve access to menopause care.

Why is This Significant?

Because one of the biggest challenges women face isn’t necessarily a lack of treatment options. It’s finding healthcare professionals who are knowledgeable about menopause, recognize the range of symptoms, and can help patients understand which treatments may be appropriate for them.

Menopause care has evolved considerably, but medical education hasn’t always kept pace. Many women still report feeling dismissed when they raise concerns about sleep disturbances, cognitive changes, sexual discomfort, or other symptoms associated with the menopause transition.

Better provider education can help close that gap. It can also make a difference for women in communities where access to clinicians experienced in menopause care is limited.

Greater attention to midlife women’s health may also encourage more research into the relationships between hormonal changes and cardiovascular health, bone health, metabolism, cognitive function, and other aspects of healthy aging.

From Our Perspective: Women Deserve Better Menopause Care

At Nore Women’s Health, we welcome this investment because it brings attention to something we see in our practice every day: women need healthcare that takes their midlife symptoms seriously.

Many of the women who come to us have spent months, sometimes years, trying to understand why they don’t feel like themselves. Some have been told their symptoms are simply part of aging. Others have received conflicting information about hormone therapy or have been unsure where to turn for help.

We believe the first step in good menopause care is listening.

A woman’s experience of perimenopause or menopause is individual. Her symptoms, medical history, health concerns, and treatment preferences all matter. What works well for one woman may not be appropriate for another.

Hormone therapy can be an effective option for many women, but it isn’t the only approach. The goal is to help each patient understand her choices and develop a treatment plan that addresses her symptoms and supports her overall health.

We also believe women shouldn’t have to wait until their symptoms become unbearable before seeking help. Perimenopause can begin years before the final menstrual period, and understanding what’s happening during this transition can make a meaningful difference.

French Gates’ investment is encouraging because it recognizes that menopause care deserves the same serious attention given to other major areas of healthcare. More research, better clinician education, and greater public awareness can help make informed, individualized care accessible to more women.
