What Is Bioidentical Hormone Therapy?

Men and women experience hormonal changes throughout their life, especially during the natural aging process. When this happens, many symptoms can come along with that. For women, hot flashes, night sweats, and other intrusive symptoms can get in the way of your everyday life. For men, the dips in testosterone may result in weight gain, fatigue, or depression. Bioidentical hormone therapy addresses these symptoms and provides the relief that you need.

This therapy may also help avoid other serious medical issues for women, such as cardiovascular problems.

Benefits of Hormone Therapy Pellets

Your Nore provider may begin your therapy with troches (oral) or cremes (topical). These prescriptions can be filled at a pharmacy and are administered by the patient daily.

Many patients ultimately switch to hormone therapy pellets, which are inserted under the skin. This quick procedure can be performed in Nore's office and offers several advantages:

  • Pellets from a network of blood vessels pick up the hormone at the pellet source and deliver the hormone throughout your body. So more hormones are delivered when you are exercising or stressed (and need more) than when you are sleeping or relaxed (and needless).
  • Pellets are absorbed and not swallowed, so there is no liver metabolism.
And the best part--pellets are inserted every three months, so you don't have to remember to take your hormones every day!

Hormone therapy pellets offer another solution that allows you to focus on the things that matter most to you. Menopause happens, but it doesn't mean that your life has to be interrupted.

Cost of Bioidentical Hormone Therapy

Bioidentical hormone therapy treatment is considered a relatively affordable option for men and women who struggle with hormone issues. You should expect your initial treatment to cost more than the ongoing care due to the multiple comprehensive lab tests that will need to be conducted to determine the severity of your hormone imbalance. After that, you should expect a lower-cost monthly rate. Typically, bioidentical hormone therapy costs about $200-500 per month. The ongoing treatment may include a combination of medication, creams, and pellets to achieve the best results for your exact needs.

How Are Pellets Inserted?

Instead of taking them orally, pellets are inserted just under the lower abdominal wall or in the hip area through a small incision and a trochar. This procedure requires local anesthesia. You may need to avoid water sports and baths for several days following insertion and may experience minor bruising. Your system slowly metabolizes the pellets, so you experience a natural, steady release of hormones. They need to be replaced every 3-4 months.

How Is The Dosage Determined For Hormone Therapy?

Hormone therapy is intended to be used at the lowest dosage that is appropriate physiologically and for the shortest amount of time to control the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause in women whose quality of life is negatively affected. Our providers will develop a program especially for you and, when appropriate, will work with you to decide on the safest dosage and duration and the best-individualized plan possible.

Is Hormone Therapy Replacement Safe?

he North American Menopause Society (NAMS) issued a position statement in 2017 that contains guidelines for hormone therapy replacement use. The statement included updated information and new findings since the last issue in 2012. Among the conclusions and new or expanded areas covered in the statement:

  • Hormone Therapy (HT) remains the most effective treatment for vasomotor symptoms (VMS) and the genitourinary syndrome of menopause.
  • The risks of HT differ for different women, and treatment should be individualized using the best available evidence to maximize benefits and minimize risks, with periodic reevaluation for the benefits and risk of HT continuation.
For women aged <60 years or who are within ten years of menopause onset, the benefit-risk ratio appears favorable for HT treatment.
  • The risk of heart disease is greater in women who start HT >10 years after menopause onset or after age 60 years.
Vaginal estrogen or other non-estrogen therapies may be used at any age for the prevention or treatment of the genitourinary syndrome of menopause.

Is Hormone Therapy Replacement Safe?

Hormone replacement therapy has been widely used for years. Conventional (non-bioidentical) hormone therapy side effects are well documented. There is an overwhelmingly large body of evidence that supports the claim that bioidentical hormone therapy is safer and more effective than synthetic hormone replacement. However, it's important to remember that no drug, supplement, or herb is 100% safe—there is always a chance that you may experience an adverse reaction. That's why women must consult with a hormone specialist before beginning any hormone therapy regimen to safeguard themselves from side effects.
