In this edition of What We’re Reading, we’re looking at a recent, 9/23/2026, Washington Post report exploring menopause symptoms that often receive less attention but can significantly affect daily life including brain fog, word-finding difficulty, heightened anxiety, irritability, and unexpected anger.
The article also highlights a striking disconnect between women’s daily experiences and what is documented in clinical settings. In a study comparing online discussions with health records, researchers found that cognitive symptoms appeared nearly four times as often in Reddit communities as they did in clinical notes. Mood changes and weight fluctuations showed a similar pattern.
This gap does not mean women aren’t experiencing these symptoms. Instead, it suggests that cognitive and emotional changes may be less likely to be discussed, recognized, or documented during routine appointments than more familiar menopause symptoms such as hot flashes.
From Our Perspective
At Nore Women’s Health, we believe the full menopause experience deserves to be heard. Brain fog, anxiety, irritability, and anger are not character flaws or signs that you are failing to handle stress. They are real, biological parts of the hormonal transition.
Fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone directly affect brain functions involved in memory, attention, and planning. Sleep disruption and stress can intensify these difficulties, which is why menopause symptoms rarely have a single cause or a one-size-fits-all solution.
We encourage women to discuss changes in concentration, mood, and sleep with their healthcare providers. Keeping a brief symptom journal with specific examples of how they affect work, relationships, or daily routines can help begin a productive conversation.
A thoughtful evaluation helps determine whether symptoms stem from perimenopause or another underlying factor. Depending on your health history and goals, an individualized plan may include hormone therapy, nonhormonal treatments, sleep support, nutrition, and stress management.
Most importantly, you deserve to be heard. Symptoms missing from a medical chart are not missing from real life. Recognizing the emotional and cognitive sides of menopause is essential to complete, compassionate care.
If brain fog, anxiety, or mood changes are interfering with your life, the team at Nore Women’s Health is here to help you explore personalized, evidence-informed options. Request an appointment to take the next step toward feeling focused, confident, and like yourself again.
